On January 23, 2020, Hans Clevers from the Hubrecht Institute in the Netherlands published an article titled "Snake Venom Gland Organoids" in the journal Cell. In this study, long-term culturable organoid systems were successfully established for the venom glands of several snake species. The transcriptome of Cape coral snakes was reassembled, revealing high levels of toxin transcripts expressed by the organoids. Single-cell RNA sequencing of both the organoids and primary tissues identified distinct toxin-expressing cells as well as proliferative cells expressing known mammalian stem cell markers, and the cellular composition of the organoids was similar to that of the primary tissues.

Recently, Ludovic Valliers team at the Wellcome–MRC Cambridge Stem Cell Institute published an article in Science titled "Cholangiocyte organoids can repair bile ducts after transplantation in the human liver." The article reports successful biliary regeneration using cholangiocyte organoid transplantation.

A group of researchers used organoid technology to cultivate miniature human tear glands that can cry. These organoids serve as models to study how certain cells in human tear glands produce tears or do not produce tears, which helps in understanding the biological characteristics of crying and dry eye syndrome.

The combination of the two technologies has produced organoid chips, which leverage the strengths of both approaches to complement each other, making them more useful and predictive preclinical experimental models. This makes them widely applicable in the development process of traditional or new drugs. By using patient-derived tissue samples to create organoids, organoid chips can also generate specific disease models, enabling precision medicine. Additionally, organoid chips can facilitate the development of regenerative medicine through high-throughput analysis to optimize organoids under in vitro conditions.

David Tuveson from Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory in the United States and Hans Clevers from the Hubrecht Institute in the Netherlands co-authored an article in Science titled "Cancer modeling meets human organoid technology," summarizing how organoid technology can be applied to cancer research.

Professor Lin Xin Hua's team at Fudan University, led by Zhao Bing, announced the first human-derived organoid study after the outbreak of the pandemic. They found that SARS-CoV-2 can directly attack the liver, causing liver damage, by infecting biliary epithelial cells and downregulating the expression of genes related to tight junctions and bile acid transport in biliary tissues. This research was subsequently published in Protein & Cell.
